What is a Buttweld Fitting? β€” Complete Beginner's Guide

New to specifying pipe fittings? This complete guide explains what buttweld fittings are, the different types, how they are made, and how to specify and order them correctly.

What is a Buttweld Fitting?

A buttweld fitting (also written as butt weld fitting or butt-weld fitting) is a pipe fitting that is joined to a pipe by welding at the beveled ends. The fitting has the same outer diameter as the pipe it connects to, and the joint is made by welding around the full circumference of the beveled ends β€” creating a permanent, leak-tight connection with the same strength and pressure rating as the pipe itself.

Buttweld fittings are the standard connection method for all high-pressure, high-temperature, and critical piping systems in oil & gas, petrochemical, power generation, and offshore industries worldwide.

The 6 Types of Buttweld Fittings

1. Elbows (90Β° and 45Β°)

Change the direction of flow. 90Β° LR elbow is the most common β€” used wherever a 90Β° turn in piping is required. Available in Long Radius (1.5D) and Short Radius (1D).

2. Tees (Equal and Reducing)

Branch connections β€” split or combine flow. Equal tee has three equal outlets. Reducing tee has a smaller branch outlet than the run.

3. Reducers (Concentric and Eccentric)

Change pipe size. Concentric for vertical piping, eccentric for horizontal piping where drainage or pump suction alignment is required.

4. End Caps

Seal the end of a pipe permanently. More reliable than a flange and blind for permanent closures.

5. Stub Ends

Used with lap joint flanges. Allows use of lower-cost carbon steel flanges with expensive alloy pipe β€” the flange never contacts the process fluid.

6. Long Radius Bends (3D / 5D)

For piggable pipelines and slurry systems where the standard 1.5D elbow radius is too tight. Lower pressure drop and reduced erosion.

How to Order Buttweld Fittings β€” 6 Things to Specify

1

Grade / Material: E.g. SS 316L, WPB, WP91, Duplex S31803. This determines the material standard (ASTM A403, A234, A815 etc.)

2

Type: E.g. 90Β° LR Elbow, Equal Tee, Concentric Reducer, End Cap.

3

Size: E.g. 4" NB, 6" NB, 8" NB. For reducers: 8"Γ—6" (large end Γ— small end).

4

Schedule / Wall Thickness: E.g. Sch 40, Sch 80, Sch 160. Must match the connecting pipe schedule.

5

Standard: E.g. ASME B16.9, MSS SP-43, EN 10253-4. Specifies the dimensional requirement.

6

Quantity: Number of pieces, or weight in kg. For project orders, send the full Material Take-Off (MTO) list.
