Copper Nickel Grades

The Standard for Seawater Piping.

Copper nickel alloys have been used in naval and marine applications for over a century. Their natural biofouling resistance eliminates the need for antifouling coatings, making them ideal for seawater cooling systems, fire suppression, and desalination plants.

FAQs

Copper Nickel Fittings β€” Expert Answers

Why is copper nickel preferred over stainless steel for seawater piping?

+
Copper nickel has several advantages over SS 316L in seawater: natural biofouling resistance (marine organisms do not attach easily), excellent resistance to chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion (which affects SS 316L in seawater), and resistance to stress corrosion cracking. SS 316L can suffer pitting and crevice corrosion in stagnant seawater β€” a major concern in closed cooling systems. CuNi 90/10 is typically the more economical and practical choice for seawater service.

What is the importance of iron content in copper nickel fittings?

+
Iron content (1.0–1.8% for 90/10, 0.4–1.0% for 70/30) is critical for corrosion resistance in seawater. Iron forms a protective copper-iron oxide film on the surface that provides the long-term corrosion resistance. Material with insufficient iron content will have significantly reduced seawater corrosion resistance. Always verify the iron content in the MTC before accepting copper nickel fittings for seawater service.

Can copper nickel fittings be welded to carbon steel or stainless steel?

+
Copper nickel can be joined to other metals, but requires specific transition joints or special welding procedures. Direct welding of CuNi to carbon steel is generally not recommended for critical seawater applications β€” galvanic corrosion of the carbon steel will occur. Transition couplings or flanged joints are the preferred method. CuNi-to-CuNi welding uses ERCuNi filler metal and is straightforward for qualified welders.
