Frequently Asked Questions

Alloy Steel Fittings β€” Expert Answers

What is the difference between WP91 and P91 buttweld fittings?

+
WP91 and P91 refer to the same grade. "P91" is the informal name from the ASME pipe designation (ASTM A335 P91 for pipes). "WP91" is the formal fitting designation per ASTM A234 WP91. When someone says "P91 elbows" they mean fittings to ASTM A234 WP91.

Why is WP91 replacing WP22 in new power plants?

+
WP91's allowable stress at 600Β°C is approximately 58% higher than WP22's. This means thinner walls, less weight, lower welding cost, and faster thermal response. For ultra-supercritical steam conditions above 600Β°C, WP22 simply cannot be used β€” it doesn't have adequate creep strength.

What PWHT is required for WP91 fittings?

+
WP91 requires PWHT at 760Β°C Β±15Β°C for a minimum of 2 hours. This is critical β€” P91 is a martensitic steel that must be in the proper tempered martensite condition. Under-tempered P91 is brittle; over-tempered loses strength. Always use qualified PWHT procedures.

Can you supply with IBR approval for Indian projects?

+
Yes. For Indian boiler projects under Indian Boiler Regulations, we supply with IBR Form III-C inspection. Advance notice required as IBR inspection must be arranged prior to dispatch. Mention IBR requirement at inquiry stage.
