Frequently Asked Questions

SS Buttweld Fittings β€” Expert Answers

What is the difference between SS 304 and SS 316 buttweld fittings?

+
SS 304 is the standard grade with 18% chromium and 8% nickel, offering good general corrosion resistance. SS 316 adds 2–3% molybdenum, dramatically improving resistance to chlorides (seawater, acids, salt environments). For marine, offshore, and chemical applications β€” always specify SS 316. For general industrial, food, and pharmaceutical use in non-chloride environments, SS 304 is fully adequate and more cost-effective.

When should I specify SS 304L or SS 316L instead of the standard grade?

+
The "L" grades (Low Carbon) are specified when the fitting will be welded and exposed to corrosive environments without post-weld heat treatment. Standard 304 and 316 can suffer sensitization during welding at 425–870Β°C, reducing corrosion resistance near the weld zone. 304L and 316L keep carbon below 0.03%, preventing this. Always specify L grade for welded pipelines in corrosive service unless you can perform PWHT.

What is the difference between SS 321 and SS 347 buttweld fittings?

+
Both are stabilized grades designed to prevent sensitization at elevated temperatures. SS 321 uses titanium as the stabilizer, while SS 347 uses niobium. SS 347 generally offers slightly better high-temperature strength and creep resistance β€” preferred in refinery and petrochemical high-temperature service. SS 321 is chosen for exhaust manifolds, boiler superheaters, and service up to 900Β°C.

What standards cover stainless steel buttweld fittings?

+
The primary standards are: ASME B16.9 (dimensions and tolerances for factory-made wrought fittings), ASTM A403 (material specification for wrought austenitic SS fittings), MSS SP-43 (light-wall stainless, Sch 5S/10S), and EN 10253-4 (European standard for butt-welding pipe fittings). We supply to all these standards with complete documentation.

What is the minimum order quantity?

+
No minimum for stocked standard grades (SS 304, 316, 321) β€” we serve urgent single-piece requirements and full container loads equally. For non-stocked special grades or large-diameter fittings, a minimum may apply. Send us your requirement β€” grade, type, size, quantity β€” and we respond within 4 hours with availability and pricing.
