What is the minimum temperature for ASTM A234 WPB fittings?

ASTM A234 WPB is rated for a minimum temperature of -29°C (-20°F) without impact testing. For applications below -29°C you must use LTCS grades — WPL6 (to -46°C) or WPL3 (to -73°C). Using WPB below its minimum temperature rating is a code violation and a serious safety risk.

What is the difference between LTCS WPL6 and WPL3?

Both are Low Temperature Carbon Steel from ASTM A420, rated for different minimum temperatures. WPL6 is impact tested at -46°C — the standard LTCS grade for offshore and gas processing. WPL3 is impact tested at -73°C for LNG service and deeper cryogenic applications, and contains 1.60–2.24% nickel.

ASTM A234 WPB is rated up to 427°C (800°F). Above this, specify alloy steel grades: WP11 (to 550°C), WP22 (to 600°C), or WP91 (to 649°C). Above 427°C, carbon steel also faces graphitization concerns in long-term service.
